In an interview only one result really matters

That's right, you have to aim for and become number 1.  In July 1989, Walmart completed a £6.7 billion takeover of Asda with the aim of becoming the number 1 retailer in the UK.  By 2003 it was the second-largest supermarket chain by market share, a position it retained until 2014. 

I wonder if they would have come so high in the rankings if they hadn’t originally aimed for number 1.

Even if you aim for number 1, it’s not guaranteed, but you’re much more likely to get there than if you aim for number 2 in the first place.

In interviews as in business, you have to aim for number 1.  It's a bit like archery: sometimes you'll miss and sometimes you'll hit the bulls-eye, but you won't hit the bulls-eye unless you aim for it.  Every time you "miss" at an interview let it strengthen your resolve to be persistent until you do "hit the bulls-eye".
